Why Even Bother With Bespoke Tailoring?
You can get a great deal off the rack these days. Excess inventory, carry-over stock, rising overhead, and competition are all reasons why off-the-rack retailers can sell you a suit for 400 bucks and send you on your way. So why bother with Bespoke?
I’ve often asked my clients WHY they shop with me, as a way to understand what the perennial suit client thinks, and how I can “tailor” my business to fit in with that need. What I’ve found has been revealing.
Firstly, and somewhat ironically, is hassle. I used to think that buying a bespoke suit meant going in for multiple fittings and waiting a long time to receive my garment; however, that’s not the case. With today’s advanced CAD computerized technology, patterns are created without multiple fittings and a garment is nearly ready-to-wear upon first fitting, and that’s if alterations are even required. If alterations are required, they are generally minor touch-ups because the substantial construction has already taken place. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for off-the-rack. Any variation is shape from the “off the rack norm” pre-constructed garment means doing substantial work on the body of a suit which is not only time consuming, but also not as accurate as starting from scratch, and very often becomes expensive quickly. You may start with $400 but end up spending double that, wasting weeks on multiple fittings going into the store, and end up with a product that’s not made for you, but rather a patch job to make up for deficiencies.
Secondly, there is the ability to choose. With bespoke, there’s no limitation except that for what you can imagine. “LGFG Fashion House carries over 3,000 fabrics for suits and shirts with unlimited styling options,” says leading Canadian retailer LGFG Fashion House clothier Jessica Tait, who serves a substantial clientele in Vancouver and Winnipeg. You don’t have to wait for what you like to come in your size, you don’t have to peruse from store to store to find the right cut or the right look, you just get it and you’re done. “This is highly appealing for men, the majority of who don’t like shopping, and it’s appealing for women because once their sizing is done, they can get anything in any pattern, a choice not available off the rack” adds Tait.
Thirdly, there’s convenience. Niv Ben-Shlomo, a Toronto-based executive clothier also with Canada’s leading bespoke label, LGFG FASHION HOUSE, takes the care to go to his clients on-site. For many of his clients, who have offices outside the Toronto downtown core, fighting with traffic to get what they like is a hassle, and Ben-Shlomo takes it upon himself. “I go to my clients, on a set appointment, whether they’re in Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Oakville or you name it,” he says, saving his clients valuable time and effort, adding “clients who shop this way start referring to me as their ‘Fashion Guru’ because they didn’t realize dressing well can be this easy!”
So why bother with bespoke? Perhaps the better question is, why bother with off-the-rack? Less choice, the hassle of finding what fits and spending your valuable time doing it, with often a lesser product and less selection and at a comparable cost. It’s no wonder that bespoke tailoring is seeing a significant rise.
