TIPS: What to look for in Autumn/Winter suits?

Although we in LGFG Fashion House are all about the classics, it’s sometimes still interesting to play along the trendsetting fashion game. Even with classic suits there can be details that will also change the overall look. The best time to check the changes in fashion trends is of course during the change of seasons. So let’s see what is IN (and practical) for the seasons now and ahead.

Before you start investing in the latest trends in tailoring, it’s good to take it back to the basics. This means paying attention to the stuff your suits are made of. No matter how your preferred style may look, you’ll always have to consider the fabric – otherwise you’ll end up reaching for extra layers to keep out the cold. During the Autumn/Winter season it is important to opt for a heavier cloth. Time to change your favorite lightweight cotton, mohair and linen to the soft and warm-keeping flannel, cashmere and wool over 9oz. These are sturdy fabrics that will definitely keep that wintertime biting cold away from you and as heavier materials they offer the optimal insulation from the low degrees. Remember that when you invest into a suit made from natural fibre, as opposed to synthetic, you will garner several benefits. For example, natural wool, unlike polyester, will retain heat in the cold weather, and likewise remain cool in the warm seasons, making it an all-round better choice than synthetic fibre when it comes to seasonal performance.

Also, we need the suit to be good looking and stylish as well, right? Just as lighter colors sit well on lighter cloths, richer, darker shades are always king of autumn and winter’s heavier tailoring. Charcoal grey, navy and black will offer you the most versatility. This is especially important to bear in mind if you’re only buying one suit. In this case, we recommend starting with a charcoal and saving your navy as your #2 choice.

And now last but not least: the trends. The pattern of autumn/winter 15 is definitely prince of wales and checks. Suits in darker colors and heavier cloths look better with subtle micro patterns. But it is not the rule – larger scale statement motifs are not out of the question. If neither pattern nor darker neutrals make your tailoring hit list, then choose from several different exciting tones instead. Keep in mind the earthtone colors nature offers us during autumn and choose from there: shades of green or rustic brown? Camel or burgundy? There are many to choose from.

And a good tip is layering! Suddenly a three-piece double-breasted suit becomes wearable. You don’t need to sacrifice top-notch style during the autumn and winter. But keep in mind that your autumn/winter time suit should maybe be just a bit larger that the summertime one – because of the layering underneath. For example ditching you shirt for a classic cashmere turtle neck?
