Men’s suits—latest trends
With the ‘skinny boy’ suit of 2008 and 2009 having had its day, and unstructured, boxy suits still remaining out of fashion, the slim suit has been finding favour recently. When looking to invest in a men’s suit, look for a cut that has the following style elements:
-
broad shoulders
-
a slim waist
-
slim trousers
The devil is in the details
Although single-breasted suits are really never out of fashion, they are the dominant trend at the moment. If a sleek cut, single-breasted suit is what you’re after to add to your wardrobe, you want your tailor to ensure the these details are included, or ask the salesperson to point you in the right direction:
- upper button should be positioned around your navel
- slim to medium-sized notched lapel or a shawl
- a breast pocket that can only accommodate a pocket square as opposed to a folded pocket handkerchief
Brown is the new black
As to popular suit colour trends, men’s suits in brown are big on the runways this year—look for shades of coffee, chocolate, caramel, bark and tobacco.
It’s a great look for business attire—if you typically wear tailor made suits, you can describe what you’re after to your tailor by comparing it to the suits Don Draper of Mad Men wears into the office, although this has a trimmer waist.
For men’s suits, the sleek suit has been inspired by the continued popularity of the 1960s fashion trends.
