Head-to-toe
You’ve got the suit. It’s time to get the right shoes.
The potential of a great men’s suit can seem to start and end at being well-tailored, but it’s important to look sharp from head-to-toe.
Demonstrate your style savvy with the right shoes. Here are three shoe styles to improve the look of your suit for day or night:
1. Wing-tips:
Put a twist on a proper lace up shoe by wearing wing-tips. They have an intricate design on the toes (created by a technique called brogueing) that shows attention to detail. Look sharp in your grey business suit with a pair of brown wing-tips.
2. Rounded Cap-toe shoes:
Cap-toe shoes are segmented at the toe to provide a sharper look to the foot. The look is usually found on oxfords, which are close-lacing to thin the foot at the top, and give the toe more of a “pop”, demonstrating the craftsmanship of the shoe.
3. Loafers:
To keep it a little more casual, wear a loafer with hard edges. This 50’s style shoe is becoming popular again, and a well-made shoe looks professional all the time. The idea is to have a shoe that has as much care put into it as your custom men’s suit, allowing each to complement the other.

Take Care
Shoe care is important. Make sure you don’t let your shoes lose their quality by not taking care of them. Use mink oil to keep soft leathers at their best, and get into the habit of drying off moisture with a cloth when you come in from the outside. A good pair of leather shoes can last you a long time and improve with age, but need to be kept from scuffing or accumulating dirt to look well-worn instead of unkempt.
Water–you can’t help it if there’s a sudden downpour. Prevent damage by stuffing your leather shoes with newspaper and drying them away from heat, as using a heater to dry your leather will let it crack. Take care of your suit’s best friend!
Choosing and Caring for Your Brushes
Keep your tools in good shape to give your shoes the best treatment possible.
Keep the brushes and cloths in a closed container to protect from outside elements like dirt.
Use a different shoe polish brush for different colour polishes.
Apply your shoe polish to leather with a shoe polish brush. Shoe polish brushes are made with horsehair and have a small, round head.
Use a shoeshine brush before AND after applying polish. The first shine removes excess dirt, while the second shine removes excess polish once the shoes are fully dry.
Suede shoes require a different brush. It will have a rubber side to clean the suede of dirt, and a side with firm bristles to fix the nap of the suede and keep your shoes looking neat and tidy.
Finally, clean your brush. Use just a little bit of water and soap to clean the bristles.
