Season – What time of year is it?

Summer

Simply due to the weather, you’re going to be wearing something very different to summer and winter weddings. If it’s a summer wedding you can steer away from heavy fabrics like wool, as you don’t want to overheat. Wearing lighter colours will be part of the theme, but also aid in keeping you cool as they absorb less heat. It’s a great excuse to wear lighter shirts and pants as opposed to the darker shades that are custom at the office.

Winter

Winter weddings will usually find guests in darker wool suits and are a little more formal. Consider a darker green or grey suit to switch up from black, and match with a dark tie.

Dress Code – What’s the invitation say?

If it’s a black tie wedding, a tuxedo is required. However, if it is a semi-formal wedding, you have more options as to what to wear. Semi-formal allows you to choose between a tuxedo and a tailored suit. One of the easiest ways to look formal is to make sure you have an ironed shirt and a steamed suit and tie.

Shoes – What shoes can I wear?

You can wear slightly more creative shoes to a wedding than you can in the office. Consider oxfords with brogueing to show a flair for detail. Always have your shoes perfectly polished and in top-shape to make sure not to undermine the look of your suit.

Once you have your decision on your suit and shoes, you can add to the look. For a very formal wedding consider a cummerbund with the tuxedo. For a semi-formal winter wedding, consider a solid colour pocket-square or tie. Summer weddings allow you to be the most creative. Consider a thin and patterned tie or pocket-square with your suit to add detail and fun to the outfit at a summer city wedding. If going to a summer country wedding, wear a bow tie in a solid, muted colour to complement your suit. At a beach wedding, choose a knit tie with your linen suit to keep it stylish and dressed-up, but relaxed.

And always remember–iron, iron, iron those shirts.
