Caring For Your Custom Men’s Suit
It can’t be said enough; care is as important as cut. If you’re investing in a custom men’s suit, it’s worth it to know how to care for and when to clean your suit. More money will be saved in the end if anything from belts to suit jackets are cared for properly. A good rule of thumb is to offer your investment pieces the same amount of aftercare as went into the making of them–a lot, and it’s worth it!
Don’t Overdo It
First things first: dry-clean as little as possible. It’s easy to expect the professionals to do it properly, but you do not want your suit to fade or receive too much wear from being dry-cleaned too frequently. Rotate between suits to keep them cleaner for longer, as well as reduce wear and tear. Air your suit out on the hanger to keep it smelling crisp, and spot-clean with water when possible.
LGFG Fashion House offers custom tailored business suits. Hand tailored and delivered to your home or office.
Use the Right Hanger
This may seem simple, but a suit is heavy and requires a good quality wood hanger to keep its best shape. Furthermore, a custom men’s suit is made to fit you perfectly. Wire hangers will let the jacket sag and wear on the fit that the tailor has measured just for you. Hanging also reduces wrinkles by letting the fabric relax without any pull. Keep it in a suit bag to let the suit breathe while keeping away moths and any dirt in the air.
Brush it Off
Like a pair of leather or suede shoes, a suit should be brushed after use. While leather shoes should be wiped of dirt afterwards, men’s suits should be brushed lightly to remove dirt that may produce oil and discolour the wool or linen. The right brush is soft-bristled and kept clean.
Steaming and Ironing
If you have the time, and suits are important in your day-to-day life, get a small steamer for your suits. Steamers can be very inexpensive and will renew the crease of the pant and jacket while loosening any wrinkles. Ironing should be done on low-heat as the tool will be directly touching the fabric, and high-heat can be hard on fabric colour and softness. Though dry-cleaning and ironing are allowed in moderation, steaming is much more gentle on suits than the chemicals used in dry-cleaning and the heat of the iron.
Shade
Again like leather, keep it out of direct sunlight to be good to your custom suit’s colour. Sunlight will discolour the fabric in the same way it fades leather shoes or belts.
Take care of your suits and they will last for years.
