The Style Faux Pas that you’d want to miss
There are many-many style faux pas that the media is covering and that all the people talk about. So you must already know the basic rules, like not to wear your sandals with your sport socks (or any kind of socks actually). And if you still break this rule.. well… the joke is on you!
But here, we will talk the next level style rules, so you could take your personal style to a totally new level.
- Skinny jeans. Oh well, when that trend came most of us hoped it would go away just as fast. But this one refuses to go away. The trick here is dressing for your body type. Some men can actually make a pair look good but they truly are a small minority. Sadly, skinny jeans aren’t the male equivalent of Spanx. If you catch yourself thinking ‘I’ll just undo a couple of buttons when I sit at my desk’, then they’re too tight. If your legs are more tree trunk than twig-like, chances are skinny jeans won’t do you much justice. Instead, try a tapered slim cut or straight leg jeans for a roomier alternative that won’t cut off your circulation. The same goes for your chinos and trouser collections.
- Cheap shoes. There are a number of guys who have clearly invested in a really great suit, only to let it down with scuffed up shoes – invariably with a pointed toe. Bin them immediately, and invest in a pair of lace-up brogues or Derby shoes in quality leather. LGFG Fashion House is a great choice when you need some style advice and get some quality hand-made shoes that go well with your LGFG bespoke suit. Our executive clothiers can give you amazing style advice and product selection with both!
- Summer footwear. Well it sure does feel good to put on those flip flops and feel the wind between your toes. But when they are appropriate beachwear, they are useless when worn in a city scene. People might step on your toes and if it won’t be painful, it sure will be dirty. For summer we recommend to wear moccasins or espadrilles. They are breathable, lightweight and practical in the heat and also more sophisticated that a pair of flip-flops.
- Suit jacket with jeans – is a no-go. They just don’t work. It’s because of the cloth (which is too smooth) and the styling (which is too formal). All together it’s just a mess. Suit jackets need to remain suit jackets. At least 99% of the time. Want to pair a blazer with your jeans? The key is to pick the right style: steer clear of traditional suit jackets, which are often far too formal, and instead of opt for an unstructured sports coat, rugged tweed blazer, or equally relaxed design. Then, combine with slim, plain denim to produce a perfectly balanced smart-casual look.
- Jeans with smart shoes. Teaming jeans with smart shoes can be tricky. Darker colours of denim like indigo and black work better for dressed up looks. They should also be cut slim or have a slight taper with a leg opening that’s narrow enough not to spill sloppily over your shoes. Speaking of which, Derbies, loafers, brogues or Chelsea boots work best in this instance.
- Elementary knowledge: when men don’t remove the basting thread on jacket vents. You know the little cross of thread that keeps your vents together on the back of your jacket? You’re meant to take them off. Otherwise it’s not a vent – it’s some sort of bizarre, fragile slit. Same goes for the tailors tape on shoulders- if the thread is visible, it’s meant to be removed.
- Haircut. You need to be realistic about what haircut is going to work. Not everyone can achieve their desired look, unfortunately. A slick-back style doesn’t look great with curly hair and if you’re receding or thinning, don’t try a quiff or long hair. Speak to your barber about what’s a good look for your hair type and face shape. Then they can suggest something that takes into account what you like, what looks good for your angles and hair type, and what can be styled well bearing in mind your style and lifestyle.
- Don’t over style yourself! When some men first get into style, they really go for the whole “Pitti Peacock” look and it’s all a bit much. You don’t need the bracelets, pocket square, tie clip and brightly coloured socks all in one look, it’s overkill. When starting your style game keep in mind that “less is more” and the Coco Chanel quote: ‘Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.
Yours truly,
